Reclaiming Narratives:
Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future
October marks Black History Month a time where we celebrate the achievements of our Black community. This year the theme is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, an invitation to take part in shaping how stories are told. It shines a spotlight on untold stories, unsung heroes and everyday individuals who have made an impact in the Black community.
Uzo Iwobi
Originally from Nigeria, Uzo Iwobi qualified as a barrister and solicitor. After relocating to Wales, she quickly realised how much of an uphill battle she would face. Despite her qualifications, she was told to “forget being a lawyer,” not because of her skills, but because of the colour of her skin. The job centre told her, “Black people don’t have opportunities” and suggested she “get a job on the shop floor.”
Though disheartened, Uzo refused to be defeated. She founded the Race Community Council to connect and support other Black people in her community. Her dedication to creating change led her to teach at Swansea Law School as a law lecturer for nine years, after which she joined South Wales Police and was appointed to the Police National Diversity Team at the Home Office.
Uzo also served with the Commission for Racial Equality until 2007, and in 2008, her incredible contributions to South Wales communities were recognized when she was awarded an OBE.

Empowering and Educating the Next Generation
This month is more than just a celebration—it’s about reclaiming the narratives that have been overlooked or misrepresented.
By sharing history in its fullness, we pass down a legacy of resilience, brilliance, and cultural richness to the next generation. From the innovators who changed the world to the artists who moved our souls, Black history is woven into the fabric of global history.
For young people, it’s a reminder that they are part of a proud legacy and are the creators of tomorrow. Understanding their past helps them envision a future where their voices lead the way.
At ateb Group, we believe in taking action to build a more inclusive and equitable future. Our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) Action Group meets quarterly, open to the public, aiming to educate, inspire change, and challenge cultures. We invite you to join us on Thursday 7th November 2024 for our next meeting—come see how we’re working to make a difference.

Making a Difference
As part of our commitment, we’ve proudly signed up to Tai Pawb’s Deeds Not Words pledge, and we’ve adopted the Rooney Rule to ensure BAME applicants who meet the criteria are given an interview. Equality, diversity, and inclusion are at the core of everything we do. We believe in building teams as diverse as the communities we serve.
This Black History Month, let’s honour the contributions, achievements, and rich heritage of Black communities in the UK while also reflecting on the work still needed to ensure a more inclusive future. At ateb Group, we remain committed to shaping a future where everyone can thrive.
Let’s continue learning, growing, and building a future that belongs to us all.
