Important News About the End of the Right to Buy/Right to Acquire

A recent change in legislation will end all existing Housing Association Tenants’ Right to Buy/Acquire their home on 26th January 2019.

The Right to Buy/Acquire will end for “new homes” only on 24 March 2018. A “new home” is one which has not been let as social housing for the 6 months before the 24 March 2018 (for example a newly built home or one that has been recently bought by the Association to let).

Not all tenants’ currently have the Right to Buy/Acquire the home they currently rent. Certain criteria must be met about the length of tenancy, the type of grant used to build/purchase the property, its location and whether provided/built specifically for older people or those with a disability.

If you want to buy/acquire your home before the ‘Right’ is ended you can apply up to and including 26 January 2019. A form can be downloaded from our FAQ section. Please be assured that the end of the Right to Buy/Acquire your home will not affect your tenancy in any other way.
